Captain James F. Jordan, U.S. Navy, Retired

Captain Jordan enlisted at Pittsburgh, PA in 1957. After duty at Great Lakes, IL and Bainbridge, MD, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1962. Captain Jordan's initial service from 1962-1965 was in destroyers. As Main Propulsion Assistant on USS Charles P. Cecil (DD-835), he served in the Cuban Crisis. He served as Damage Control Officer on USS Gearing (DD-710), as Engineering Officer on USS Charles P. Cecil (DD-835), and as Executive Officer on the Minesweeper USS Agile (MSO-421) in Charleston, SC from 1965-1967.

While Captain Jordan was in command of the USS White River (LSMR-536) from 1968-1969, the ship was awarded two Navy Unit Commendations and a Meritorious Unit Citation for operations in Vietnam.

Captain Jordan was on the faculty of the U.S. Naval Academy (Company Officer/Admissions Board) from 1969-1971, followed by Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, CA where he earned a Master of Science degree in Management.

From 1973-1974, he served as Naval Gunfire Officer for Commanding General III, Marine Amphibious Force in the Western Pacific. He was next assigned to the Destroyer Charles F. Adams (DDG-2) at Mayport, Florida as Executive Officer from 1974-1975.

He served with Military Sealift Command as Chief Staff Officer for the Mediterranean SubArea in Naples, Italy from 1975-1977, and assumed command of the Military Sealift Command in London, England in 1977.

Captain Jordan commanded the Destroyer USS Newman K. Perry (DD-883) in Newport, RI from 1979-1981. During this tour, the ship earned the Squadron "E" Excellence Award. He commanded the Landing Ship USS Sumter (LST-1181) in Little Creek, VA from 1981-1983. Sumter was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for service with U.S. Forces Lebanon in Beirut. Sumter also earned the Squadron "E" Excellence Award.

Captain Jordan's next assignment was as Assistant Chief of Staff, Plans and Policy for Commander Second Fleet aboard the Flagship USS Mt. Whitney (LCC-20) from 1983-1985. He served with NATO Forces as Assistant Chief of Staff, Commander-in-Chief Western Atlantic in Norfolk, VA from 1986-1987.

From 1987-1991, Captain Jordan served as the Commanding Officer and Professor of Naval Science for the Carnegie Mellon University NROTC Unit. Captain Jordan retired in 1991 after 35 years of service to the United States Navy.

His decorations include the Bronze Star with "V", Meritorious Service Medal (2), Navy Commendation Medal (2), Combat Action Ribbon, and the Republic of Vietnam Distinguished Service Order. He wears the Vietnam Campaign Medal with six battle stars, and other campaign awards.
