Boarded: 9/1/1980
Departed: 7/30/1984
Experiences to Remember:
I remember being an
immature kid who didn't grow up until long after I left the Sumter.
But is was my first ship and I have good memories. Learning to
cook from MS1 Pascua and MS1 Neri. Drinking with SK2 Bobby Priebe. Getting
multiple Captain's Masts and being sent to deck division for six months
and then having to strike for MS even though I was designated MS out of
A school. I would be interested in hearing from former shipmates.

There are so many memories. I think the people that were
on the ship is what I miss the most, the friends that you make are forever just
a couple, Fahey, Hadji Henderson, Scott Stewart, Rick Bauburger (I know I
butchered his last name), Chris Naylor, The guys from the Laundry, Louis
Almendarez, Big Titty Smitty (Brent). Learning to water ski in Cuba was fun,
Scuba Diving in Greece and just getting ripped in every other place we would
visit.

Experiences to Remember:
I found my
discharge certificate the other night while unpacking some things and
got to wandering if there might be a web site and guess what i found.
This is pretty cool. Memories, I've got tons of them. There is probably
a lot that i don't remember too. The Unitas in '88 was unforgettable. Like
to say hey to a few people like zank, dane, marty, towers, ray-ray, young,
t-cupp, blok and george "rod" rodriguez. I know everyone's first name just
didn't feel like typing all that in. ha! There is a lot of other guys i
didn't mention but had a blast with. If master chief maurer reads this,
hey, it's me, smitty. Still playing softball? I am for my church. Well love
to hear from some of you. Drop me a line.seeya

I'm not too clear on the check in and check out date's,
but I can tell you that I was on the infamous cruise that found us off the
coast of Liberia for three months. Evaps down, taking showers on the tank
deck or outside when the weather was right. The Seabees dockside bar, the
Shellback Ceremony and out chopping from a Med Cruise in Puerto Rico. I
attended the decommission of Sumter. I was very sad and very proud. There are
very few that could say they served on one of her class and I'm proud to say I
was one of them. If you remember me, e-mail me. I'm proud to say I served on
the USS Sumter LST 1181!

Doing 3 back - back
- back Med cruises and going through 3 XOs and GITMO and LIBERIA and
SHELL BACKING, etc...and just an incredible experience of being HAZE
GRAY AND UNDERWAY FOR ALMOST 80 TO 85 PERCENT OF 3 YEARS WAS A
CHALLENGE...Especially as an boot ensign and country boy growing up in a
intense environment quickly was worth every minute on the USS
SUMTER.....
Best to each of our
ship mates out there...

I had alot of great memories from the Sumter that remain with me
today.... I really enjoyed the Med cruise and now know how lucky i was too
see the countries we did when we did. Want to say hello to any and all of
the Sumter sailors if you remember me , 2nd division . I look at the list of
names and remember alot of you . Looking foward to reuniting or
communicating by email or maybe even sharing memories with pictures we had
taken on board. Its nice to show my children something we all did and
believed in . LONG LIVE THE SUMTER!

I don't know where to start. There were so many great guys
in all of the divisions, and so many good times. Remember the Med cruise when
we ended up in Liberia? As I like to remind people around here when I get
chided for not being in Desert Storm, Hey, you didn't see any Liberians
invading the US in 1990, did ya?
