Experiences to remember:
Being anchored in Moorehead City N.C. during a storm and experiencing
45 degree rolls, passing through the Panama Canal, turning 21 in Rio de Janeiro.
Tricing up the leathernecks during attack raids, Todd coopers wild ways,
watching Duffy dance at the enlisted club (a site to see) surrounded by women.
The USS Nimitz pulling along side during formations, Montevideo Uruguay, (ooh la
la), anyone from the deck department (much love and respect for the work the
deck and engineering put in on a daily basis). Ensign Blon (coolest cat on
board). To the whole Gamecock crew, much love and respect. Sorry to report the
passing of SN David Archer in 1996, if you were onboard Sumter and didn’t know
Archer, you probably weren’t on board.

I remember my
crusies. 6 months and short ones too. Gitmo Lybria gator squares were
the most boring thing ever. Oh yeah getting alittle to much to drink and
have one friends nose tip bit off. You know who you are.
Spain,Chile,England and to many to say. The realm was the Machale's
Navy. Zanky,Miller,Beam,Towers,Marteniz,Howard,Master
Chief,Young,Chico,Ken and many more. Through the years I grew to know
and love my fellow crew members. They were family to me. When we had
some inspections and we had laundry out to dry in the engine room. Man
were the mad. The new marine's abord hanging over the side telling there
stories to the sea.Playing DD in the library. Working out with D in the
tank dack trying to get buff for my woman. I was the best dresser of the
ship.LOL If any one sees this please e-mail me would love to hear from
all of the gang. THE FLIP IS BACK.

Ok here we go do
you really want to hear the stories i have. Well to begin with i am a
sumter wife. My husband and has bandits (realm) were the most wonderful
people you could have met.his friends were so nice to me and my son
travis back then. Ibecame part of there family and so did the to me.som
were luck to come to our wedding and share our joy. We have been married
for 14 years sept.15 and we still try to keep in touch with the guys.
Last night 07/24/04 he found a couple more of the guys and was the most
happiessiest person. The memories came back to me. Let's many nights of
babysitting grown men lol. Going out roller
skating, beach, malls, dependent crusies, picnics, just having fun with the
family. They excepted me and my son that's why i love them all dearly
and always will. They are family and family stick together.i will always
be here for them and if they come to visit our doors are always open for
a visit.
Love, tina labuen (ray rays wife)

I really had a great time on the Sumter, My
most memorable time would be when we crossed the equator and I went through the
shellback initiation on my birthday, HT2 Brock (the dawg) and Chief Stanley made
sure I would never forget. I liked being out at sea and being able to see
different parts of the world. I do miss the fun we had in "R" Div., and all the
guys I worked with onboard the ship. Hey Chief, I still have not found the "flag
bags", and regret finding the HT "punch" (ouch).

What's up to all
you guys. glad to see alot of you have stumbled on this site. GREAT
SITE. memories are hard to forget. i was in second div deck. (
hooray for me ) i went by modaddy if anyone gives a shit. the thing
that pissed me off was watching everyone go on liberty while we were
working are asses off lol. hello fellow sumter shipmates !! it's been
awhile since i heard from anyone so i decided to drop everyone a few
lines. hope everything is good with all of you. as for me, since i got
out of the navy, life for me has been pretty well. got lucky and got a
job with the us postal service. i've been there for 13 years now.
Looking back at my time in the military, the thing i miss the most is
the relationships that you make with so many people. i met so many of
you, and i really enjoyed my time throwing a few back with ya guys.
Being underway and travelling all over this earth was also pretty cool.
we went to places that we'll probably never get another chance to see
again. the only thing that sucked was being in deck dept.... there is
little opportunity for us. the work was hard and most of the time
bullshit. for ex. being in israel in 95 degree heat, scrubbing rusty
ass gripes with jp5. i felt like a human torch ready to ignite. then,
to make matters worse, to see everyone else knocking off to go on
liberty. i guess working through all the bullshit, it brought me alot
closer to alot of you. because we were all in the same situation.
being at sea was nice. i still miss going out to the flight deck at
night and looking out at the ocean, and looking up at the stars. i hope
this message gets to all you guys, if anyone would like to give me a
call, feel free. i would love to hear from some of ya, take care and
good luck in all you do. modaddy

What a ride. This was my first ship, and of course the best ship. Jim
Benson and I served together in Deck Department, along with a bunch of other
great men. I had a blast and remember a lot of the men that I served with. I retired from the Navy in 2003 and now live in Norfolk with my family.

much since then. I remmember when SEALs were on board and would walk
naked from lower seabee berthing (on portside)to the head to take
showers. Now this ship is almost half females. I could tell you guys
some stories. I'll up date this. Take care
