joy! I would like to get in touch with anyone that was on there from 1990-1993

Serving in deck with a bunch of guys who had far more potential to do other
than things than being a deck hand. The experience as a whole was an eye
opener to try and achieve greater goals and not settle for the first option
you get in life. Thanks Charles for referring this site to me. I never knew
it existed.

Lasher, Brock, Jeff, Porter, Jake, Rocky, Chris Naylor, Buck Medlin, Lynn,
Carson, Chief Robert "Dr. Death" Farrow, etc. Some of the best times of my
life. Many not repeatable in this forum. Many times getting rusty in the
weight room. Kicking footbag on the flight deck. Picking on Ensign "tater"
Tatum. Drinking rum in a dusty wh@#$house in Ecuador and hooking my best
buddy up with the best looking transexual in the place (whoops!). Making my
division officer, Ensign Foster "pop tall" by imitating the captain's (Steve
Reis had a very distinctive voice) voice when he was standing JOOD on the
wing. Biting an olive out of Manier's big belly after the shellback
initiation, I still have nightmares. Eating fresh crab in the Straights of
Magellen (Chile I think). The smell of puke below decks the week after
bringing the Marines on board in North Carolina, God bless them every one.
Kenny G for unreps, disgusting. Press on.

on board the Gig
you do remember, and last but not least, O'SULLIVANS bar.

Experiences to remember:
My first on-deck experience on the Sumter: Rode the bus from Norfolk to Moorehead City, NC to report to the Ship on her return from a Med
cruise. Walked up the Bow Ramp in my whites and sea bag after they finished
off-loading the marines and their equipment. The Ship's BMC greeted me with a
firm handshake, and ordered another deckhand standing by to take me below, get
me a rack, help me unpack, get me a hot meal on the mess deck and back on deck
to assist in closing the Port bow door. Little did I know what I was getting
into... 4 hours later and totally exhausted, 1st and 2nd Div managed to close
that bow door, a crank at a time... Welcome to deck division! I remember being
sent to find the keys to the bow-doors and what an HT punch really was..., I
remember mail buoy watch (never stood it myself) and sending Mike Coleman to
obtain 50 feet of shoreline from the bos'n locker... He might disagree...
but I remember it all too well...
