Experiences to remember:

Because I was only on my first-class summer cruise, I didn't spend much time aboard, but I have vivid memories of a few things. We were involved in Operation Sharp Edge at the time and we remained mostly off the coast of Liberia. I recall that one of the water purification systems was down so there were no showers for days (we Midshipmen took a shower on deck during a rainstorm and we had to get hosed down in huge groups in the bay below decks). I bunked with the Gunnies. My best (and worst) experience was the Shellback initiation. I remember shivering as we got hosed down on decks during the night. I also remember a junior officer the other navy and marine JOs nicknamed "Hollywood Mo" because he took long, hot showers when we were supposed to be holding off while we awaited possible boarding of evacuees from Liberia. I also had a great time with some of the junior marine officers, especially one from Norwich, where I graduated. We also got a chance to go over to a British frigate and drink some beers (nice to get shitfaced at sea)! Wish I'd spent more time aboard. Great crew! Thanks for the memories, guys!!
