Experiences to Remember:
Joined the Gray One in Newport News, Virginia upon leaving Great Lakes
Training Center. The Sumter was in dry dock, being overhauled. Once
completed,we sailed down to Cuba (GITMO) for a shakedown cruise which
included a real man overboard - (this is not a drill). I was in deck dept,
2nd div and really learned a lot about hard work. After a year or so,
developed in interest in Operations and with the help of some good
buddies, was able to strike for OS (CIC). This was very exciting, navigating
the amphib landing craft to the beach, talking to helecopters and tracking
skunks. We went on to take some Great Cruises, (North Atlantic - Med - Carib).
I wish the ship was still around to give my kids a tour. Please advise on
any get togethers, it would be fun to share memories and see former crew
members.

Experiences to remember:
I
checked aboard in 1974 and made my first Med cruise that year assigned to
Engine Room #3 and to AMR 2, I think, it’s been a while. After the cruise I
requested an “A” school. To my surprise it came back HM “A” school, and the
funny thing was I didn't apply for that school. The Chief Engineer had me
reassigned to X Div to work with the Ship’s Corpsmen. I left the ship in late
1975 before the next Med. I went to Great Lakes to school. It’s funny after
all these year that I can still recall the faces of the crew but not the names
except for one, EN1 Mike Baldwin, go figure.
