Experiences_to_Remember: This was where you would learn your trade inside and out with real hands on experience!!!! Eoss was just coming into being. Insurv meant a lot of blood, sweat and lost sleep. Even though She was showing a lot of wear and tear, the Sumter always made her commitments on time and with Pride. The crew was tight and proud. Operation Smoke Watch offered many challenges. Many thanks to ENC Harmon, ENC George, EN1 Agnew and EN1 Price for their guidance. Signed onboard this site: July 20, 2006

So, I guess you could say I grew up on Sumter. I played 3rd base on the softball team. We won the Phiblant afloat league and came in second in the Alphiblat tournament and the Norfolk area tournament. We were pretty good and had a lot of fun. Made a Med cruise from 9/74 - 3/75 and went through shipyard overhaul from fall of '75 - summer of '76. Then went through reftra at GTMO before getting out one month early, so didn't have to make the North Atlantic cruise in Sept. 76. I had some really great shipmates that I will never forget. RM1/RMC Ted Miller, RM2 Jim Harley, RMC's Crawford and Moreno, RM3 Lyn Smithwick, PN3 Gary Nicely, RM3 Larry Nichols, Ens/Ltjg/Lt Reed Jerome, ETN2 Jose Serna, and RMSN Hank Spear were all special people for this sailor and taught me a lot. My CO's were Cdr's R.B. Adgent and Dave Bolden. We had a great Radio gang, while I was onboard. From Chiefs Moreno, Crawford, and Miller right down to our lowest ranking Seamen, we were a "can-do" radio shack. The 2.5 years I was on Sumter were eventful. 6 months in the Med, 6 months in the shipyard for overhaul, reftra at GTMO, running aground on Onslow Beach. I met men that I will always remember and admire. Some favorite memories....Basketball by the stacks....liberty in Monaco and Cardiff. Had a little roach motel apt. on 17th Bay St. and my wife and I loved to walk on the beach 1/2 block away. I also loved to fish in Little Creek harbor. Not so favorite...GTMO and spending the bicentennial in Port Au Prince while our sister ship was in NY for the Tall Ships extravaganza. I also remember getting banged into by a barge, while we were undergoing ops in the Chesapeake right outside Little Creek. It put a huge dent in the bow. It was still there, when I got out. Don't know if it ever got fixed. I will never forget my time on Sumter. Med. cruise Sept '74-Mar '75, Boston in April '74.....BRRRRR, even too cold to watch my beloved Sox at Fenway. Shipyard overhaul '76 and finally reftra at GTMO right before I got out. Fair winds to all. Signed onboard this site: August 4, 2006

Boarded: 4/1/1975 Experiences to Remember: I reported on board sometime around April of 1975. I spent three weeks at Little Creek Base doing busy work around the base until the ship got back from it’s cruise. When I reported aboard I was welcomed by EM2 Tom Nedermeyer, he took me under his wing and showed me so much. He was a blessing, he sure went the extra mile. I remember the cruise to Bermuda to pick up construction equipment and deliver it to Rhode Island. Also the dry docks in Portsmouth and life on the YRBM next to the ship during it’s overhaul at Horn Brothers Shipyard. Then of coarse Gitmo, wasn’t that fun? One of the most fun things was getting to make the movie runs and show them on the mess deck. Does anyone remember getting stuck on the beach off of North Carolina? I think the cruise to the North Atlantic had to be the best. How about the rough high seas on the way back! Remember the different sounds of the screws as they came out of the water and how she shook when she came back down. I wouldn’t have done it any different, we did have some great times and worked hard. Feel free to contact me. Signed onboard this site: March 15, 2004

"Plank Owner, put the Commissioning booklet together (only left
one crewmember's name off - my own!), special sea-detail helmsman and ghost
writer for the Captain's newsletters. Sea-trials with Admiral Bulkeley;
liberty in Jamaica where a junior deck officer had to be rescued from a house
of ill-repute. The Panama Canal at night was better than Disney World. Showing
the flag at Powell River, B.C. was an awesome trip as was the quick cruise to
Da Nang to bring the Marines home, even when we had to cruise through the San
Bernardino Strait to avoid a typhoon and I almost missed my own wedding.
